What better place to celebrate freedom than in Colonial Williamsburg, for most of the eighteenth century the center of government, education, and culture in the Colony of Virginia? George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, James Monroe, and James Madison and others molded our democracy, granting us our freedom from monarchy. But what do we mean by “freedom” today? What is the mission of psychotherapy? Is it to help us adapt or break loose from our confines? Is it an effort to help us redefine ourselves? If we want freedom, why do we resist change? Do we define ourselves by moving away from others, or by engaging with them? Is freedom breaking away or being part of a community? What are we trying to accomplish? “What is freedom?” is a complex question and we hope to entertain many points of view whether they be psychological or cultural.
ICAPP Conferences have a unique and intimate format, unlike any other conferences: papers are sent to attendees prior to the Conference, so that the Conference is devoted to discussion. Meetings are held in the mornings, so that the remainder of the day can be spent recreating or sight-seeing. Life-long professional contacts are made.
July 2011’s 50th Anniversary conference will be held in Williamsburg, Virginia at the historic Colonial Williamsburg Lodge. Located in the heart of the historic district, the Lodge offers comfortable rooms, some with views of the arrival courtyard and some overlooking the fountain garden of the Spa of Colonial Williamsburg. Interiors are inspired by the nearby Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, giving one a sense of history and Southern hospitality.
