ICAPP is the oldest Clinical Social Work organization in the United States. Originally created to promote private practice among Clinical Social Workers, ICAPP is now open to all Clinical Social Workers, whether in agency, private practice, or academia. ICAPP is an international organization that sponsors annual Conferences all over the world on relevant and timely clinical topics.
We are pleased to announce that ICAPP’s 52nd annual conference will be held at the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica in Reykjavik, the capital and largest city of Iceland, the center of culture and life of the Icelandic people, and a truly international location. The vibrant city center is characterized by colorful houses, theaters, music, museums, outdoor cafes, all within walking distance -- and geothermal pools!
This year’s theme is “THE INDIVIDUAL IN THE FAMILY AND THE FAMILY IN THE INDIVIDUAL.” Relevant issues include:
How do family experiences shape the individual? How do individuals shape the family? Do we treat the individual or the family? How do both techniques work together? How does one differentiate while still remaining part of a family? Is there ever a time to make a clean break? How does the therapist’s own family affect the treatment? Can one work with the child alone in dysfunctional or uncooperative families? Are people today more alienated from their families due to mobility? How do families use media to keep together? Statistics show more young adults live with their families; is the reason economic or psychological? How does trauma affect the family? What is the effect of family secrets on the family? Individual or family intervention: when and how to make the choice?
ICAPP Conferences have a unique and intimate format: attendees receive papers for review prior to the Conference, so that the Conference is devoted to discussion. Meetings are held in the mornings, so that the remainder of the day can be spent recreating or sight-seeing. Life-long professional contacts are made.
We welcome submission of papers related to the theme of the Conference. All papers should include practice examples, which would serve to illuminate this discussion. (It is not necessary to include practice examples in the abstract.)
