ICAPP-CSW began in 1960 when 200 highly-trained clinical social workers from the United States, Canada, and Mexico met for the purpose of figuring out how to establish the private practice of clinical social work as a recognized field of its own. That goal was accomplished when clinical social work private practice was recognized as an entity by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Since then, ICAPP-CSW has helped clinical social workers maintain the highest standards of the profession while developing advanced methods of clinical social work to meet the contemporary needs of a changing society.

ICAPP-CSW is based on the belief that the advancement of private practice clinical social work depends upon staying current with the latest treatment options. That is why ICAPP-CSW has developed and continues to maintain discussion forums that serve as international networks to caring, motivated professionals who strive for the advancement of private practice clinical social work. These forums for communication enable privately-practicing clinical social workers to grow both professionally and personally through the sharing of information, ideas, and experiences.
